How it works OpenRouter Free?

OpenRouter Free is not a separate neural network, but a router from OpenRouter: it selects a model from the available set and routes the request there, filtering out unsuitable options. You don't need to decide in advance which model to use; the selection happens on the router side. In BotHub, it works without a VPN or foreign card, with payment via Russian cards in rubles based on usage, and unused tokens do not expire. Requests go through a unified OpenAI-compatible API, so you can switch from the router to a specific model without rewriting the integration; the entire catalog of over 250 models remains available in the same window. Traffic is encrypted via AES-GCM, chat history is not saved, and companies have access to contracts, invoices, electronic document management, and an admin panel with limits. Useful for quick draft requests where the specific model doesn't matter, testing your application integration, handling background auxiliary tasks, or exploring multi-model workflows before choosing a primary model.

Frequently asked questions about OpenRouter Free

Can I use OpenRouter Free results for commercial purposes?

You can use generated results for commercial purposes. You own all rights to the content you create. The only restriction: make sure your prompt does not include copyrighted third-party material. You are responsible for respecting the rights to any input data.

What can Free do and what tasks is it suitable for?

Free works with text, accepts images and documents as input, can reason before answering, and call functions. It is suitable for analyzing articles and reports, preparing drafts, working with code, and extracting data from scans and screenshots. The context window is 200,000 tokens, so an entire document will fit into a request.

How much text can Free write in a single response?

The single response limit is 66,000 tokens, which is a very long text: a large section of documentation, a detailed analysis, or a lot of code in one pass. If the material is larger, divide the task into parts and assemble the result sequentially, passing the previous fragment to the model.

Can Free reason before answering?

Yes, reasoning mode is confirmed: the model can break down a task into steps before providing an answer. This helps with logic, mathematics, code debugging, and multi-step instructions where not only the result but also the solution process is important.

Does Free support function calling and JSON output?

Yes. Free supports function calling and structured JSON output, making it easy to integrate into agents and services. In BotHub, this is available via a unified OpenAI-compatible API: you describe the schema and tools once, and change the model without rewriting the integration.

Can I upload images, audio, or video to Free?

Images and documents — yes: you can send a screenshot, diagram, PDF, or contract and ask to analyze the content. Audio and video are not marked in our data, so for voiceovers or analyzing recordings, choose a specialized model from the BotHub catalog.

How well does Free understand Russian?

We do not have specific data on language quality, so we won't make any promises — test it with your own phrasing, it's quick. The BotHub interface and ruble payments are available from Russia without a VPN or foreign card, and tokens do not expire.
